On 10 June 2021, the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa made an announcement on the amendment to schedule two of the Electricity Regulation Act.

The amended regulations will exempt generation projects up to 100MW in size from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) licensing requirement, whether or not they are connected to the grid. This will remove a significant obstacle to investment in embedded generation projects.

On Power FM’s Power Talk, Lukhona Mnguni spoke to the Chairperson and Co-Founder of the Black Energy Professionals Association, Meta Mhlarhi CA (SA) who provided commentary on these submissions made by the President and how they will potentially assist in dealing with the energy crisis in the country.
